Why Kenya
The beauty and cosmetics industry has become one of Kenya's most active investment stories, pulling in capital to establish new lines of business and to acquire successful enterprises through multimillion-dollar deals.
The scale is regional. The beauty industry in the Middle East and Africa was estimated at about USD 30 billion in 2023; South Africa alone represented USD 6 billion, and Nigeria and Kenya are second and third among sub-Saharan nations, with Kenya's market above USD 450 million. With a population of almost 53 million, Kenya has become the sales and distribution hub for the East African markets.
Changes in lifestyle have driven most of that growth, and the supply side explains the rest: importers are the biggest players in the foreign-brand market, bringing cosmetics from Europe, North America, the Middle East and Asia. Dubai has become the hotspot for African importers placing orders — a show in Nairobi shortens that route.
Kenya is also one of the leading apparel exporters in Sub-Saharan Africa, with government policy (Buy Kenya, Build Kenya) backing the textile industry, and technology and sustainability are reshaping production — including upcycling labels such as Maisha and the clothes-swap communities that have grown around conscious consumption in Nairobi.
